I trained as an interpreter at Bristol University from 1992 to 1994 and started work as a part time freelance interpreter when I graduated. In 1998 I went full time freelance and became a qualified interpreter in 2000. Throughout my career I have worked in both the community and more formal settings such as conferences and business settings.
I conducted the first ASLI Fees and Salaries Survey and was the chair of the Legal Working Group for several years.
In the early to mid 2000s I was part of the first team of interpreters for Sky TV, working on their live news and sports news broadcasts on Friday evening and Sunday mornings.
Due to childcare responsibilities restricting my ability to travel for work from about 2008 I shifted more into the local community shorter bookings, now they are older I started to go back into the conference and platform work. Then the pandemic hit, and we all had to work from home.
I threw myself into remote platform working, ensuring I had a good technical set up at home.
In 2021 I joined AIIC (International Association of Conference Interpreters) and am now the coordinator for the Sign Language Network within that worldwide organisation.
I am a qualified Supervisor for interpreters, being on the first cohort of the specialist 360 Supervision course for SLI’s and although I no longer actively supervise the skills and knowledge I learnt on the course are still helpful to me.
